3-Dimensional Transrectal Ultrasound This is a diagnostic and functional test which will require a one hour visit to determine the location, density and function of the sphincter muscle or the location, depth of spread and lymph node status of a rectal cancer. The muscles of the sphincter and the muscular wall of the rectum can be visualized independently. Radiation treatment, child birth or diseases such as multiple sclerosis can affect the muscles of the pelvis. Patients need to perform an enema (Fleet phosphosoda) two hours prior to the procedure to facilitate the procedure.
This new procedure is performed by very few physicians in United States, of which Dr. Forstner-Barthell and Dr. McConnell are two. It was developed and perfected by Dr. Buess, a surgeon in Germany, who designed a system that applies the principles of laparoscopic, or minimally invasive, surgery to polyps in the rectum. It allows patients with benign polyps and early cancers to avoid abdominal surgery to remove the rectum by letting the physician excise the polyp through the anus. This is done under general anesthesia and requires at most a 24 hour hospital stay after the procedure, allowing patients an early return to their regular activities.
